The Brief
Wallace Building Contractors delivered the concrete and formwork package for the Gibson Sheat Car Park development, a five-level structure designed to provide additional parking capacity while contributing to the seismic strengthening of the existing Gibson Sheat Centre.
The project involved the construction of a substantial 750m³ reinforced concrete raft slab, up to 1.5 metres thick, founded on concrete piles behind the existing building. Our scope included the construction of 6 full-height reinforced concrete shear walls, some up to 500mm thick, with several formed using specialised single-sided formwork against the existing structure. Permanent steel formwork was installed within existing window openings, allowing the new shear walls to be structurally connected to the existing building using threaded reinforcement systems extending through existing beams and floor structures.
Additional works included the encasement of structural steel columns within reinforced concrete columns throughout the building and the construction of a curved concrete access ramp linking all levels of the car park.
