The Brief
Wallace Building Contractors delivered specialist concrete construction works as part of the Hutt River Flood Protection programme between Ava and Ewen Bridge, including strengthening works to the Ava Rail Bridge and a range of associated flood protection infrastructure.
A key component of the project involved underpinning and strengthening the existing concrete bridge supports for the Ava Rail Bridge. The works required temporary realignment of the river, installation of reinforcing steel into the existing bridge piles, and concrete encasement of the foundations, all while maintaining uninterrupted rail operations throughout the construction programme.
In addition to the bridge strengthening works, Wallace constructed new reinforced concrete floodwalls, outlet structures, access stairs, sloping aprons, retaining structures, and approximately two kilometres of paving associated with the wider flood protection scheme.
