The Brief
Wallace Building Contractors delivered the concrete construction works for the Centre of Creative Arts (CoCA) building at Massey University, an innovative and award-winning education facility designed by Athfield Architects.
The project incorporated a world-first structural system combining post-tensioned LVL timber columns and beams with reinforced concrete foundations, beams, floors, shear walls, and structural elements. Designed to withstand major seismic events, the building was engineered to move during an earthquake and then return to its original position, showcasing leading-edge structural design and construction technology.
Our scope included the construction of the reinforced concrete structure together with numerous architectural concrete features, including bandsawn-finish concrete panels, in-situ plinths, stairs, corbels with recessed lighting, and extensive decorative concrete elements throughout the development. Wallace also delivered approximately 3,000m² of decorative external concrete works surrounding the building.
