Victoria University Gateway Building

The Brief

Wallace Building Contractors delivered the concrete and formwork package for the 12,000m² Gateway Building, a major development at Victoria University of Wellington's Kelburn Campus.

Our involvement commenced with the enabling works required to prepare two substantial construction zones, including crane bases for two tower cranes and extensive retaining structures. The southern zone was constructed into a steep hillside and required the formation of a suspended crane base, a 15-metre-high anchored pile wall, 600mm diameter piles extended by reinforced concrete columns up to 10 metres above existing ground level, and approximately 500m² of timber lagging to facilitate backfilling works along Kelburn Parade.

Within the northern zone, Wallace delivered the concrete works associated with a large basement structure excavated up to nine metres below the existing ground level. Our scope included the installation of more than 200 precast concrete panels, large reinforced concrete shear walls, footings, panel stitch connections, and in-situ concrete columns. The completed basement structure was designed to support the reinstatement of Culliford Drive above.

This project highlights Wallace Building Contractors' expertise in complex concrete construction, specialist formwork, retaining structures, and large-scale education developments.
