Wellington Airport Terminal Extension

The Brief

Wallace Building Contractors delivered the concrete works for the southern extension of Wellington International Airport's main terminal building, the first major expansion of the terminal since its original opening in 1999.

Our scope included the design and construction of formwork for approximately 80 in-situ concrete columns ranging from 500mm x 500mm to 800mm x 800mm, together with the installation of in-situ and precast concrete beams across two levels of the structure. The project incorporated 16-tonne precast beams, hollowcore flooring systems, and flatdeck construction to create the new terminal floor structure.

Working within a live international airport environment presented significant logistical challenges, with much of the major floor construction undertaken at night to maintain access for airport operations and baggage handling services. Additional works included upgrades to Gates 9, 10 and 11, new pedestrian access connections, ramps and hammerheads, and modifications to the existing terminal façade to facilitate the installation of large-span roof trusses.

This project highlights Wallace Building Contractors' expertise in complex infrastructure developments and live-environment construction.
