Wellington Town Hall Strengthening & Restoration

The Brief

Wallace Building Contractors has played a significant role in the seismic strengthening and restoration of the historic Wellington Town Hall, helping deliver one of New Zealand's most complex heritage strengthening projects.

Our work included the construction of new reinforced concrete foundations, underground basement structures, retaining walls, and extensive in-situ concrete strengthening works. A key component of the project was supporting the installation of the building's base-isolation system, with the Town Hall now resting on approximately 160 lead rubber bearings designed to improve its seismic performance while preserving its historic character.

The project also involved the construction of new basement and stage areas beneath the auditorium, reinforced concrete overlays to existing masonry walls, and the creation of perimeter rattle-space structures that allow the building to move independently during a seismic event.

This project demonstrates Wallace Building Contractors' expertise in complex concrete construction, seismic strengthening, and working within heritage environments where technical precision and careful execution are critical to success.
